Delay Audio Feedback
Delayed Audio Feedback (DAF) encourages speakers to slow down and control their speech by playing their voice back with a slight delay, disrupting automatic speech patterns, supports neuroplasticity by retraining the brain for smoother and helps increase awareness of articulation. Usage Instruction
1 : Usage and Accessibility
- This app is completely free and accessible on any device – mobile phones, laptops, desktops, and tablets.
- If you’re using a laptop, note that now days most laptops have a single audio channel. In such cases, it’s recommended to wear headphones or audio/mic splitter connector so that:
- The headphone microphone captures your voice (input).
- The headphone speaker plays back the delayed response (output).
- On single-channel devices, using the built-in speaker and mic can cause audio interference, where your delayed output may get cancelled or distorted. Wearing headphones ensures smooth functioning.
- While there are costly wearable DAF devices available in the market, this app is sufficient for most users and offers a simple, user-friendly way to practice fluency.
2 : Understand the Purpose of DAF
- DAF plays your voice back to you with a slight delay (typically 2–3 seconds).
- This delay disrupts your normal auditory loop and breaks over helping slow down your speech and increase fluency.
- As your brain is receiving constant feedback it helps to identify automatic speech patterns. DAF disrupts these patterns and forces the brain to process speech differently. Since the speaker hears their own voice with a delay, they focus more on articulation, making speech smoother.
3 : Set the Delay Timing
- Start with a delay of around 2-3 seconds.
- Experiment with different delay times between 1-5 seconds to find what works best for you.
4 : Practice Daily
- Use DAF for 10–15 minutes few sessions a day. There’s no need for intense practice, consistency matters more. Before an interview, meeting, or oral task, a short session is enough: try 5 minutes with DAF and then 5 minutes of gentle humming to relax your speech muscles and calm your mind.
- Gradually increase use in different scenarios like phone calls, reading aloud, or casual conversations.
5 : Focus on Clear and Slow Speech
- Speak slowly and clearly; the DAF will naturally guide you into a slower pace.
- Avoid forcing fluency – let the device guide your rhythm. You can use metronome or combine with other methods as well.
